Parent FAQs

Common Questions

What standard does my child need to be?

Children should understand the basic rules and be able to play a complete game without assistance. Complete beginners can begin with the resources on our Resources page.

Can younger children attend?

The club is mainly for ages 7-16. Younger children may be considered individually, as focus and concentration are important for enjoying a two-hour session.

What happens during a session?

Sessions combine structured lessons, tactical puzzles, mini-tournaments, individual guidance and friendly competitive games.

Does my child need to enter tournaments?

No. Some players enjoy chess as a weekly hobby, while others prepare for school, county or national events. Both journeys are valued.

How can we practise between sessions?

Our junior chess resources and parent guide to supporting chess at home offer simple ways to continue learning.
