About Birmingham Checkmate

A welcoming junior chess club with a proud history of helping young players enjoy learning and fulfil their potential.

Our story

The Home Of Junior Chess In Birmingham

For over 30 years, Birmingham Checkmate Juniors has inspired, taught and supported young players at every level, from first moves to British champions.

The club's rich history stretches back generations. Legendary figures such as Mike Fox helped inspire young players, while visiting masters including GM Tony Miles and IM Geoff Lawton added to the unique atmosphere that made Checkmate a special place to learn and grow.

Our players have gone on to win school, county and British titles, and even represent England. Just as importantly, generations of children have made friends, developed confidence and discovered a lifelong love of chess.

Players Who Came Through Checkmate

Over the years, Birmingham Checkmate has helped nurture some outstanding young chess talent. Former juniors include GM Ameet Ghasi, one of England's strongest players, and his twin brother CM Sumeet Ghasi, a multiple British champion. The club is also proud to have supported WIM Sabrina Chevannes, an England Olympiad player and author of children's chess books including The Batsford Book of Chess for Children and Chess for Children Activity Book 2.

More recent rising stars include FM Adithya Vaidyanathan, the current British Under-14 Champion. These achievements reflect the club's long-standing role in helping young players grow from enthusiastic juniors into confident, ambitious and highly successful chess players.

Meet our head coach

From Junior Player To Head Coach

John Emanuel first joined Birmingham Checkmate 30 years ago as a young player himself.

Chess has taken John from Warwickshire Junior Champion and British Junior Squad member to a 2000 FIDE-rated player and certified European Chess Union Junior Coach.

For more than 15 years, John has coached hundreds of children through Birmingham Checkmate. He combines internationally respected methods, including the Chess Steps curriculum and ECU coaching framework, with a warm and encouraging teaching style.

The same young player who once walked through the club doors now helps inspire the next generation to enjoy the same journey.
